Brain and great toe and all the vessels (nǎohǎi zhūmài 腦胲諸脉) (Hǎi is gǔ + lái fanqie. The Yupian says: 'the big toe of the foot'. In the segmented physical body, the highest extremity is the brain, and the lowest extremity is the big toe. Wherever blood and flesh reach, all have their vessels. Outside the brain is hair; outside the big toe is nail; in these there are no vessels, hence this distinction is made. The older pronunciation took it as hú + mài fanqie and called it 'bone', which completely misses the sūtra's meaning).
