繒纊 (Silks and wadding; the upper character has the fanqie jí-líng [zēng], the lower kǔ-bàng [kuàng]. The Shuowen and Qieyun say: "Zēng means silk fabrics; kuàng means floss wadding." The Xiao Erya says: "Woven silks; all dyed in the five colours are called zēng." The Sancang says: "Variegated silk fabrics used as seat mats to see off guests, like carpet cushions made of wild-cotton flowers, hence called mattresses and mats (yīnrù)." Some write 鞇, which are seat cushions used inside a carriage, made of tiger skin with colourful patterns. 因 below is joined and linked to it. The Qieyun says: "鞇 is tiger skin, used as a mat (rù)." Some write 裀; the Qieyun says it means garments worn on the body, which fits the meaning here. The Sancang says: "Rù means straw bedding." The Qieyun says: "Grass mats." Some write 褥, meaning felt mattresses).
