龕室（上苦含反廣雅龕盛也取也尚書大傳龕剋也案龕室者如今之檀龕之類也於大塔四面安其小龕如室故言龕室此小室中有種種形皃如檀龕像也說文從龍含省聲）。

龕室 (First character: fanqie [k- + h- = kān]; Guangya says: "龕 means to contain, to take"; Shangshu dazhuan says: "龕 means to overcome"; regarding 龕室, it is like the sandalwood niches of today; small room-like niches are placed on the four faces of a great stūpa, hence called 龕室; within these small chambers are various images, like statues in sandalwood niches; Shuowen derives it from 龍 with 含 abbreviated for sound).
