經書 (In the Rites of Zhou, of the six arts the fifth is called the six scripts, meaning pictographs, associative compounds, mutually defining characters, indicative characters, phono-semantic compounds, and phonetic loan characters. Shu [writing/books] means to make manifest. Depicting forms according to categories is called wen [patterns]. Subsequently, phonetics and semantices supplementing each other is called zi [characters]. Zi means proliferating and gradually increasing. Inscribing them on bamboo and silk is called shu [books]. Shu is 'as such' [ru], that by which the myriad things are clearly manifested, past events recorded, and future things known. Furthermore, writing on ritual tablets and fine silk is called zi; moreover, shu also means registers).
