討伐（上滔老反漢書音義討除也禮記叛者君討鄭玄討誅也下房越反切韻征也左傳有鐘鼓曰伐白虎通伐者何伐敗也欲敗去之有作罰說文罪之小者曰罸廣雅罰折伏也切韻罰非之此義）。

討伐 (The upper character has the fanqie tao-lao [tǎo]. The Hanshu yinyi says: tao means to eliminate. The Liji says: 'If one rebels, the ruler suppresses [tao] them'; Zheng Xuan comments: 'tao means to punish and execute'. The lower character has the fanqie fang-yue [fá]. The Qieyun says: to punish by military campaign. The Zuo zhuan says: an attack accompanied by bells and drums is called fa. The Baihu tong says: What is fa? Fa means to ruin; desiring to defeat and remove them. Some write it as 罰 [punishment]. The Shuowen says: a minor crime is called fa. The Guangya says: fa means to break and subdue. The Qieyun says: fa means to blame; this is the meaning).
