釋氏（諸經有云姓瞿曇氏然氏姓別姓者所以繫統百世使不別也靈感而生也氏者所以別子孫之所出或因地或因官爵故世本云言姓即在上言氏即在下）。

釋氏 (Various sūtras state that the surname is Gautama, but clan [shi] and surname [xing] are distinct. A surname connects the lineage through hundreds of generations so that they do not diverge, being born of spiritual resonance. A clan serves to differentiate the lineages of offspring, either from location or official title and rank. Hence the Shiben says: regarding surnames, they come first; regarding clans, they come after).
