塔寺（梵云毘訶羅云遊行處謂眾遊履行處亦謂僧園今以寺代之說文寺廷也有法度者廣雅寺治也釋名云寺嗣也治事者相嗣續於中字從寸從土聲）。

塔寺 (In Sanskrit, vihāra, meaning a place for walking, denoting a place where the assembly walks and practices; it also means a saṅgha garden. Today we substitute the word 'monastery' [si] for it. The Shuowen says: si means a court; one that possesses rules and standards. The Guangya says: si means to govern. The Shiming says: si means to succeed; where those who handle affairs succeed one another. The character is derived from cun [inch/measure] with the sound tu [earth]).
