菴羅 [āmra] (Also called 菴婆羅 [āmbra]; the name of a fruit. Note that this fruit has abundant flowers but bears very few seeds. Its leaves resemble those of a willow, being over a foot long and about three fingers wide. The shape of the fruit resembles a pear, but the bottom is hooked and curved. In that country it is called the 'supreme tree,' said to be planted in royal cities. In the sūtras, that which is 'difficult to distinguish whether raw or ripe' is precisely this. The old translation gives 'crabapple' (nai), which is likely an error. The correct Sanskrit is āmra. Because the maiden Āmrapālī offered her garden to the Buddha, it was named after this. In the past, the pool dug for the Buddha by the monkey and the place where the deer-maiden saw her thousand sons were both beside this park).
