The Guangya states: '*Xiao* (肖) means to resemble, to be like.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Resemblance in flesh and bone is called *xiao*; the character is derived from "flesh" (肉) with *xiao* (小) as phonetic.' Now, to say 'unworthy' (不肖) means not resembling; it means that one's flesh and bone do not resemble one's forebears, hence the term *buxiao*. The Liji's phrase 'his son was unworthy' is this; it refers to the class of frail and vile persons).
