毘奈耶（舊言毘那耶亦云毘尼皆訛略也此云離行行亦道也謂此行能離惡道也亦翻為滅分得也言調伏化度者義譯也此有三義一引載義如十利等功德為此法所引載也二調真義能令身口二業調伏正直也三上勝地義從戒上定乃至上四沙門果地也）。

Vinaya (毘奈耶; formerly written 毘那耶 or 毘尼, which are all corruptions or abbreviations; here translated as "departure-path"; "path" is also the way, meaning that this practice can lead one to depart from evil destinies. It is also translated as "cessation-component obtained". The rendering "taming and transformation" [調伏化度] is a translation by meaning. It has three meanings: first, the meaning of guiding and carrying, as the merits of the ten benefits and so forth are guided and carried by this teaching; second, the meaning of taming the authentic, being able to tame and make upright the two karmas of body and speech; third, the meaning of supreme stages, ascending from precepts to concentration, up to the stages of the four fruits of asceticism).
