聰叡（上倉公反廣雅聰聽也韓詩明也毛詩傳曰聰聞也說文察也從耳怱聲囱音䆫象形今經文作聰俗字也下營歲反尚書叡作聖孔注云叡必通於術也國語明也廣雅智也說文深明也從目𱑸從谷省聲）。

聰叡 (*cōngruì*, perceptive and wise; the upper character has the fanqie 倉公 [*cāng* + *gōng*]. The *Guangya* says: "*Cōng* means hearing." The *Han shi* says: "Clear." The Mao *Shi commentary* says: "*Cōng* means listening." The *Shuowen* says: "Discerning; it is composed of 耳 with 怱 as phonetic." 囱 is pronounced *chuāng*, being pictographic. In the present sūtra text it is written as 聰, which is a popular form. The lower character has the fanqie 營歲 [*yíng* + *suì*]. In the *Shangshu*, *ruì* is written as 聖; Kong's commentary says: "*Ruì* must mean penetrating through techniques." The *Guoyu* says: "Clear." The *Guangya* says: "Wise." The *Shuowen* says: "Deeply discerning; it is composed of 目 and 𱑸 with 谷 abbreviated as phonetic").
