愧耻（上歸位反玉篇愧慚也說文從女作媿古文或從言作謉亦從耳作聭義訓同下癡里反說文耻辱也從耳止聲也）。

Ashamed and humiliated (愧耻): The upper character has the fanqie *guī* + *wèi* (愧). The *Yupian* says: 'Ashamed.' The *Shuowen [jiezi]* writes it with 女 as 媿; ancient texts sometimes wrote it with 言 as 謉, or with 耳 as 聭; the semantic definitions are the same. The lower character has the fanqie *chī* + *lǐ* (耻). The *Shuowen [jiezi]* says: 'Disgrace. Derived from 耳 (ear) with 止 as phonetic.'
