A moment (須曳: the first character, xiang [相] + yu [逾] fan; the second character, yu [喻] + zhu [朱] fan. A unit of time in the Western Regions; the ancient translation was an erroneous abbreviation. The correct Sanskrit sound is muhūrta, which is the 須臾 (xūyú) in the Kośa. That treatise says: “A lava, translated here as a kě (刻, water-clock mark); two kě make one muhūrta; thirty muhūrtas make one day and night.” Usually it is divided into sixty kě; at the two solstices of winter and summer, during the extreme differences of length, they encroach on each other by eight kě, giving thirty-eight kě and twenty-two kě respectively. This is also like the hundred kě of a day and night in the calendar texts of this land, which encroach on each other according to the ratio of sixty and forty. If measured against the twelve hours like zǐ and chǒu, each double-hour has five kě, two double-hours have ten kě, making a total of five muhūrtas).
