方牽（企堅反廣雅牽連也挽也說文引前也從冖象牛之縻也從牛玄聲也宀音癸營反俗從手從去作牽非也古文從手作掔）。

方牽 (*qǐ* + *jiān* [fanqie: qiān]; the Guangya says: "'Qiān' means to link together; to pull." The Shuowen jiezi says: "To draw forward; derived from 'mì', depicting the halter of an ox, and derived from 'niú' with 'xuán' as phonetic." 'Miàn' is *guǐ* + *yíng* [fanqie: gōng/jiōng]. The popular form with 'shǒu' and 'qù' as 牽 is incorrect. The ancient script writes it with 'shǒu' as 掔).
