Sewing and stitching (縫綴: the first character has the fanqie fu-meng; Zheng's commentary on the Zhouli states that the seamstresses cut and sew the robes of the king and queen; Du's commentary on the Zuozhuan states that 縫 means to patch and join together; the Shuowen states that it means to stitch clothes with a needle, formed from 'silk' [糸] with 逢 as phonetic; 紩 is pronounced zhi; the second character has the fanqie zhui-rui; the Liji states that when clothes rip and tear, one takes needles and thread to request stitching them; the Wenzi dianshuo states that 綴 means to join together, formed from 'silk' [系] with 叕 as phonetic; 叕 has the fanqie zhuan-lie; 紉 has the fanqie ren-zhen; 綻 has the fanqie wen-xian).
