焦然(上精遙反考聲云極乾也傷火也鄭注禮記云焦謂火殠也說文焦謂火所燒也從火焦省聲經文從火作[燋-隹+雀]音爵甚乖經義也)。
焦然 (the first syllable: fanqie: 精 + 遙; the Kaosheng says: 'Extremely dry; injured by fire.' Zheng's commentary on the Liji says: '焦 means a scorched odor.' The Shuowen says: '焦 means burned by fire; derived from 火 (fire) with an abbreviated 隹 (bird) as phonetic.' The sūtra text writes it with 火 as [燋-隹+雀], pronounced jue, which deviates greatly from the meaning of the sūtra).
