荊棘（上敬英反考聲云荊木名也顧野王云楚木也所以杖威者也文字典說文從草㓝聲㓝音刑下矜億反郭注爾雅云棘細葉有朿木也說文似棗叢生有朿木也從二朿朿音雌漬反漬音資次反）。

荊棘 [Thorns and brambles] (The upper character is fanqie 敬 + 英 [jīng]. The Kaosheng says: '荊 is the name of a tree.' Gu Yewang says: 'It is a tree of the Chu region, used as a staff for enforcing authority.' The Wenzi dianshuo says that it has the radical 艸 and the phonetic 㓝; 㓝 is pronounced like 刑 [xíng]. The lower character is fanqie 矜 + 億 [jí]. Guo's commentary on the Erya says: '棘 is a thorny tree with small leaves.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It resembles a jujube tree, grows in clumps, and is a thorny tree. It is composed of two 朿; 朿 is fanqie 雌 + 漬 [cì], and 漬 is fanqie 資 + 次 [zì].')
