牽拽（上挈賢反鄭注周禮云人居前曰牽顧野王云牽亦引也說文引前也從牛象牛之縻玄聲也經從去作牽非也下餘制反拽本作曳顧野王云曳猶牽也廣雅云曳引也說文從申厂厂亦聲經作拽考聲音延屑反借音字也字書並無今從曳挈音牽結反縻音美悲反）。

牽拽 (The first character is pronounced with the fanqie 挈 + 賢. Zheng's commentary on the Zhouli says: when a person is in front, it is called leading (牽). Gu Yewang says: 牽 also means to pull. The Shuowen says: to lead forward; it takes the 'ox' radical, depicting the tether of an ox, with 玄 as phonetic. In the sūtra it is written with the departing tone as 牽, which is incorrect. The second character is pronounced with the fanqie 餘 + 制. 拽 originally was written 曳. Gu Yewang says: 曳 is like 牽 (pulling). The Guangya says: 曳 means to pull. The Shuowen says: it takes 申 and 厂; 厂 is also phonetic. In the sūtra it is written 拽. According to the Kaosheng, its pronunciation is with the fanqie 延 + 屑; it is a borrowed phonetic character and does not appear in dictionaries. Here we follow 曳. 挈 is pronounced with the fanqie 牽 + 結; 縻 is pronounced with the fanqie 美 + 悲.)
