鞭撻（上鼈綿反考聲云鞭擊也尚書鞭作官刑范寗云在官不恭其事之刑也顧野王云用草以朴罪人也從革便聲下坦恒反考聲云撻亦鞭也孔注尚書云撻笞撻也說文從手撻聲）。

鞭撻 (upper: *pet* + *mjen* [biān]: The *Kaosheng* says: 'To whip and strike.' The *Book of Documents* says: 'The whip was made the official punishment.' Fan Ning says: 'It was the punishment for being disrespectful in carrying out duties in office.' Gu Yewang says: 'Using a switch of plants to beat criminals; follows the leather radical with the phonetic *biàn* (便).' Lower: *tʰan* + *hong* [tà]: The *Kaosheng* says: '撻 also means to whip.' Kong [Anguo]'s commentary on the *Book of Documents* says: '撻 means to flog and beat.' The *Shuowen jiezi* says: 'Follows the hand radical with the phonetic *dá* (達)').
