Flanking the road (夾路: the upper character is pronounced 甲. Kong [Anguo]'s commentary to the *Book of Documents* states: "Flanking (夾) means on both steps." Gu Yewang states: "Flanking means being on both sides." The *Wenzi dian shuo* also says: "Both sides; derived from two people flanking and supporting a grown adult." The *Shuowen* states: "Derived from 大, representing the form").
