[A mallet strikes the drum]: The first [character] is fanqie 附 (fu) + 無 (wu) [MC: *bĭu]. Gu Yewang states: '枹 (fu) is a drumstick.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'The handle used to beat a drum. Formed from 木 (wood) with the phonetic 包 (bao).' In the sūtra it is written with 孚 as 桴; 桴 has the sound 孚 (fu). The Analects states: 'A large one is called a raft (筏); a small one is called a float (桴)'—this is not the meaning of the sūtra. The second [character] is fanqie 孤 (gu) + 五 (wu) [MC: *kuǒ]. For 鼓 (drum), the Kaosheng gives the standard form of the character 鼓; the Shuowen jiezi states: 'Formed from 豈 and 支, representing the hand striking it beneath a banner.' In the sūtra it is written with 皮 as 皷, which is an incorrect popular variant. 豈 has the sound fanqie 誅 (zhu) + 屢 (lü); 攴 has the sound 普 (pu) + 卜 (bu).
