莖稈 (the first character is xing-geng fan; the Cangjie pian says: "The stem of a plant is called jing"; the Kaosheng says: "Of bamboo it is called ge; of trees it is called mei"; the Shuowen jiezi says: "Composed of 'grass' with jing as phonetic; jing is pronounced gong-leng fan"; the second character is gan-lan fan; Du's commentary to the Zuo zhuan says: "Gan means straw"; the Shuowen jiezi says: "Gan is the stalk of grain; composed of 'grain' with han as phonetic"; also written 䄨, which is not adopted here; in the sūtra text it is written with the grass radical as 𦼮; the Shuowen jiezi says: "𦼮 is the name of the violet vegetable", which contradicts the sūtra's meaning and is incorrect).
