Pits and hollows (kěngkǎn; the upper character is ke-geng fan. The Erya says: "Keng means a ruin." Guo's commentary says: "This refers to moats, pools, and ruins." The Gujin zhengzi says: "Keng means a depression. It takes the earth classifier and kang as phonetic." It is also written with the mound classifier as 阬, which is also acceptable. The lower character is ke-gan fan. The Book of Changes says: "Kan means a pitfall." The Picang says: "Kan is also a pit." The Shuowen jiezi agrees with the Book of Changes: "It takes the earth classifier and qian as phonetic." In the sūtra text it is written with the trap classifier [臽] (ta-lao fan) as 埳, which has the meaning of rough or uneven; this is not the intent of the sūtra, and is not adopted here).
