Striking with a mallet [椎撲]: the first [character is pronounced with the fanqie] zhi-zhui (直追反). The Liutao of Taigong states: 'The mallet (chuí) weighs eight catties and has a handle five feet long.' Gu Yewang states: 'A mallet is used to turn/strike objects.' The Shuowen [jiezi] says it is formed from [the semantic component] mù (木, wood) and [the phonetic component] zhuī (隹). In the sūtra text it is written as 槌, which is a vulgar character. The second is [pronounced with the fanqie] pang-miao (龐邈反). The Zishu states: 'To strike each other, hand-to-hand combat.' The Shuowen [jiezi] says it is formed from [the semantic component] shǒu (手, hand) and [the phonetic component] pū (菐), meaning to beat and strike; 'combat' (搏) has the sound bo. The sūtra text has 菐 as phonetic (菐 has the sound bu); written with the person radical as 僕 is an error.
