Vulture Peak (鷲峯: the first character is pronounced [jiu]; the second character has the fanqie [fang] + [feng]. On examination, this is a sacred mountain in India, located in Magadha. This mountain is high and steep, where vultures roost. This bird resembles an eagle but is smaller; it is also an uncanny bird, constantly feeding on corpses. If it hovers and gathers above villages or towns, someone there will inevitably die. Because of this ominous omen, it was named Vulture [Peak]. The sūtra text was preached on this mountain; therefore, it indicates its old name: Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain, which is a Sanskrit phonetic corruption. It is also called Vulture Mountain. The Shuowen says: 'It derives from 山 [mountain] and 鳥 [bird] with 夆 [fēng] and 就 [jiù] phonetic.').
