Dousuo 兜娑 (the first is fanqie: 登樓 [d- + -ou]; a phrase of a mantra. In the sūtra text it is written with 'self' 自 and [日*儿] as [自*日*儿], or written as 兜, both of which are incorrect and do not form legitimate characters. When this sūtra reaches the third sheet, there are names of divine ṛṣis, and copyists erroneously wrote the character 'ṛṣi/immortal' (xian 仙) as 'buddha' (fo 佛), for roughly thirty-six or thirty-seven characters. In the sūtra exemplar, the cursive form of the character 仙 was unclear; the scribes failed to recognize it and took it to be 佛. From then on it was altered to 佛, which greatly violates the meaning of the sūtra. Those who copy the canon in later times must correct it to 'great ṛṣi' (daxian 大仙); 'great buddha' (dafo 大佛) is incorrect. Moreover, all the various characters written within the mantras are completely erroneous, their instances being so numerous that they cannot be cited exhaustively. Furthermore, this being an ancient translation, the characters used are distorted and contrary, and cannot be annotated with sounds and glosses. Also, there is another edition of the Mayūra-rāja Dhāraṇī Sūtra in roughly nine sheets, whose title states that it was translated by Kumārajīva under the Later Qin. From the beginning, three and a half sheets are apocryphal. Ignorant and foolish people added this text, namely the passage in the text stating: 'Bind the boundary for seven li; let the vajra residence seize your hundred ghosts and place cangues around their necks', and stating: 'Rṣi-ghosts, king of great illusions and spells, and so forth', which are forged. From 'Homage to the Buddha, homage to the Dharma' onward, the remaining five or six sheets are the genuine sūtra. Discerning scholars who examine it will naturally perceive the true from the false; it is highly fitting that the preceding apocryphal text be removed).
