嵐颲（上音藍此嵐字諸字書並無本北地山名即嵐州出木處是也亦北蕃語也後魏孝昌於此地置岢嵐鎮城岢音可城西有山多猛風因名此山為嵐山書出此嵐字後周因岢嵐鎮城遂改置為嵐州在太原西北韻詮云嵐山風也下音列聲類云風之猛利名為颲風說文云䬆颲風雨㬥疾皃也從風列聲䬆音隣一反從利也）。

嵐颲 (The upper character has the sound 藍 [lán]. This character 嵐 is not found in the various earlier character lexicons; it was originally the name of a northern mountain, namely the place in Lanzhou that yields timber. It is also northern nomadic speech. In the Xiaochang era of the Later Wei, the garrison fortress of Kelan was established in this place—岢 is pronounced 可 [kě]. West of the fortress is a mountain with frequent fierce winds; hence this mountain was named Lan Mountain (嵐山), and from this the character 嵐 was devised in written texts. The Later Zhou, following the garrison fortress of Kelan, accordingly converted it into Lanzhou, located northwest of Taiyuan. The Yunquan says: "嵐 is mountain wind." The lower character has the sound 列 [liè]. The Shenglei says: "A fierce and sharp wind is called 颲 wind." The Shuowen says: "䬆颲 means the appearance of violent and sudden wind and rain. Analyzed as semantic 風 and phonetic 列. 䬆 is pronounced with the fanqie 隣一 [lìn], analyzed with ［禾+刂］." )
