狖貍 (The upper character is pronounced with the fanqie 攸幼 [yòu]; it is sometimes written as 蜼. The Erya says: "The 蜼 has an upturned nose and a long tail." Guo [Pu]'s commentary says: "It resembles a macaque but is larger and dark grey-black, with a tail several feet long. Before rain, its upturned nose is exposed upward; when it rains, it hangs upside down from a tree, covering its nose with its tail." The Gujin zhengzi writes it as 蜼, pronounced with the fanqie 余秀 [yòu], analyzed as semantic 虫 and phonetic 隹. Note that 狖 is also the ancient character for 蜼, analyzed as semantic 犬 and semantic 宀 [mián], formed with the ancient character for 人 as an associative compound. The lower character, 貍, is pronounced with the fanqie 里知 [lí]. Note that the 貍 is the wild leopard cat (狸) of the human world, resembling a civet cat with a pointed mouth and white at the tip of its tail. The Shuowen says: "A lurking beast, resembling a small leopard. Analyzed as semantic 豸 and phonetic 里." 貙 is pronounced with the fanqie 勅俱 [chū]; 昂釐 is pronounced 离 [lí]. The sūtra text writes it with 虫 as 蝣 and with 鼠 as 𪖂, which was mistakenly written by the translator of the sūtra; neither is the original character, but mere hasty fabrications.)
