Cháokū (巢窟, nest and lair; the first character is fanqie 仕 + 交. The Liji says: "In summer they dwelt in layered nests." The Shiji says: "In high antiquity, they nested in trees and dwelled in caves." The Shuowen says: "A bird in a tree is called cháo; it is derived from the wood radical and is pictographic." The second character is fanqie 坤 + 骨. Du Yu's commentary to the Zuozhuan says: "A kū is a subterranean room." The Gujin zhengzi gives it as with the cave radical and the phonetic wū [屋]; it is also written as jué [掘]).
