Protect and guard (保: [fanqie] 逋 + 老. Zheng's commentary on the Shijing says it means to keep and guard. Kong's commentary on the Shangshu says it means to bring peace. The Shuowen says it means to nourish; it takes person [亻] as radical and an abbreviated 𰠀 as phonetic. Ancient script wrote it as 呆 or as 𰠀. The scripture text writes it as 𰐯, which is an extreme error; when checked across all character dictionaries, this character does not exist at all).
