The Kaosheng says: "A smaller variety of wild duck." The Zishu says: "It takes its semantic element from 鳥 (bird) and 几; 几 has the sound 殊. 几 refers to the bird's short plumage flying in a fluttering (jiji) manner; it is a character with the semantic element above and phonetic below." The lower character has the fanqie [阿-可+壹]兮 [yī]. The Kaosheng says: "The yi is of the phoenix kind, a dark-colored waterbird." The Mao commentary to the Classic of Poetry says: "The fu-yi is of the phoenix kind." In the canonical scriptures and commentaries it says: "The yi belongs to the duck family." The Shuowen is the same: "It takes its semantic element from 鳥 (bird) and has 殹 for its sound; it is a character with the semantic element below and phonetic above").
