谷響（香兩反考聲云響者聲之應也孔注尚書云若響之應聲也說文從音鄉聲也或作響或從言作響經從向作嚮非）。

Echo in a valley (谷響: [響 is] pronounced *x[iang]* + *[l]iang* [xiǎng]. The *Kaosheng* says: "An echo is the response of sound." Kong [Anguo]'s commentary to the *Shangshu* says: "Like an echo responding to a sound." The *Shuowen [jiezi]* says it is classified under sound (音) with *xiang* (鄉) phonetic; it is also written 響, or classified under speech (言) as 譍. In the sūtra it is written with *xiang* (向) as 嚮, which is incorrect).
