惇肅 [sincere and solemn] (The first character has the fanqie [都+昆] dūn. Jia's commentary on the Guoyu says: dūn means simple and large. The Fangyan says it means trustworthy. Both the Erya and the Shuowen state it means generous; it is composed of 'heart' with [古/日/羊] phonetic; [古/日/羊] has the sound chún. The Shuowen notes [古/日/羊] has 畗 [xiǎng] with 'sheep' underneath. In the present sūtra text it is written with 'pattern' as 敦, which means pressed or urgent; this is not the meaning intended by the sūtra. Writing it with 'heart' as 惇 is correct. The second character has the fanqie [嵩+育] sù. Kong's commentary on the Shangshu says: sù means reverent and solemn. The Erya says: sùsù means peaceful. The Shifa says: 'Firm virtue overcoming righteousness is called sù; holding the mind with decisive resolve is called sù.' The Shuowen says: 'attending to affairs with cautious reverence'; it is composed of 𦘒 (pronounced niè) and 𣶒 (pronounced yuān); 𦘒 over an abyss indicates trembling with fear, solemnly reverent in awe; it is an ideogrammatic compound. It is explained in the same way below in fascicle 470).
