Birds and beasts (禽獸: the first character is pronounced [渠 + 林] q-ín [qín]. The Baihu tong says: "Birds (qin) is a general term for birds and beasts, making clear that they are caught (qin) and restrained by humans." The Erya says: "Those with two feet and feathers are called qin." The Shuowen says: "A general term for captured beasts. The head is pictographic; it derives from 禸 and takes 今 as phonetic. The head of a bird (qin), wild beast (li), or rhinoceros (si) are similar." The second character is pronounced [詩 + 救] sh-òu [shòu]. The Erya says: "Those with four feet and fur are called beasts (shou)." The Cangjie pian says: "Those that are captured." The Shuowen says: "To guard against wild animals. It derives from dog (犬), with 嘼 also serving as phonetic." The base text of the sūtra has 狩 [hunting], meaning a great hunt, which is not the meaning intended in the sūtra. 禸 is pronounced [柔 + 夂] r-ǒu [róu]; 嘼 is pronounced [休 + 又] x-iù [xiù]).
