鞭橽 "Whip and lash" (The first character is pronounced bi-mian [bian]. The Shuowen jiezi says: "A horse whip." The second character is pronounced ta-ge [da]. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the Zhouli says: "抶 [to flog]. 抶 is like striking; it appears in the Zuozhuan." 抶 is pronounced chi-li. The Shuowen jiezi says: "撻 is formed from 手 'hand' with 達 as phonetic").
