鉆磔（儉淹反說文云鉆䥫鋷也從金占聲䥫音天結反鋷音女輙反經作鉗䥫枷也經非此義下陟革反博雅云磔廣雅云張也又開也說文從桀石聲也）。

鉆磔 (pincers and dismemberment: [the upper character] has the fanqie jian + yan. The Shuowen says: "Zhan (鉆) is an iron clamp." It is formed with the "metal" semantic classifier and the zhan (占) phonetic component. The character tie (䥫) has the fanqie tian + jie. The character nie (鋷) has the fanqie nü + zhe. The sūtra writes it as qian (鉗), which is an iron cangue; this is not the intended meaning in the sūtra. The lower character has the fanqie zhi + ge. The Boya says: "Zhe (磔) is dismemberment." The Guangya says: "To spread open"; it also means "to cleave open." The Shuowen says it is formed with the jie (桀) semantic classifier and the shi (石) phonetic component).
