Jackals and wolves (豺狼: for the first character, fanqie chuáng-jiē; a mountain beast. The Erya says: "The jackal has dog-like paws." The Shuowen jiezi says: "A kind of wolf; composed of the beast radical (豸) with cái (才) phonetic." In the sūtra text, writing it with the dog radical as 𢦖 is incorrect. Note: there are two kinds of jackal that constantly travel in packs through mountain valleys without separating: the larger is called the 'jackal lord' (豺郎) and the smaller the 'jackal servant' (豺奴). The smaller ones go ahead to hunt roe deer and stags together; having killed them, they guard them without daring to eat, awaiting the jackal lord. The jackal lord arrives later and eats his fill first, after which the jackal servants eat the leftover meat. Thus the 'Monthly Ordinances' of the Liji says: 'In the last month of autumn, on the day of the descent of frost, the jackals sacrifice beasts,' which refers to this matter. For the second character, fanqie luò-dāng. The Shuowen jiezi says: "The wolf resembles a dog with a pointed head and white forehead, a ferocious beast; composed of the dog radical with liáng (良) phonetic").
