Somozhe cap (蘇莫遮冐: the last character is fanqie máo-bào. The Shuowen jiezi says: "Headwear of small children and southern/eastern barbarians; composed of mù (目) with yuē (曰) phonetic; yuē has the same pronunciation as above." The Wenzi jilüe has it written with the cloth radical as 帽, which is also the same. 'Somozhe' is a Hu language of the Western Rong; correctly spoken, it is 'Sāmāzhe'. This dramatic dance originally came from the western kingdom of Kucha; to this day that tune still exists. It belongs to the same category as the huntuo, damei, and botou of that kingdom. Performers wear animal masks or depict ghosts and spirits, adopting various types of masked appearances. Some sprinkle muddy water upon passersby, or hold lassoes and hooks to catch people as sport. Every year at the beginning of the seventh month, this pageant is officially conducted, halting only after seven days. Local custom hands down the tradition that this method is always used to avert, ward off, and drive away the calamity of rākṣasa evil demons devouring the populace).
