虹霓（上音紅下音藝鷄反漢書音義云虹出盛明者為雄雄曰虹闇者雌雌曰霓說文螮蝀也狀似蟲從虫陰氣也形聲字經文作蜺非）。

Hóngní [虹霓, primary and secondary rainbows] (The first character is pronounced hóng [紅]; the second has the fanqie yì + jī. The Hanshu yinyi says: 'When rainbows appear, the brilliantly bright one is the male, and the male is called hóng [虹]; the faint one is female, and the female is called ní [霓].' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'The rainbow [dìdōng 螮蝀], shaped like an insect, formed from the insect radical, signifying yin qi; it is a phono-semantic character.' In the sūtra text it is written 蜺, which is incorrect).
