薄蝕 (pronounced with the fanqie 承軄 [shí]. The Chunqiu says: "There was an eclipse of the sun." Du's commentary says: "The sun moves slowly, making one circuit of heaven in a year; the moon moves swiftly, making one circuit of heaven in a month. In a year there are altogether twelve conjunctions. Yet although the movements of the sun and moon have their regular measurements, they cannot avoid having slight excesses or deficiencies. There are conjunctions without an eclipse, and there are repeated conjunctions that result in eclipses. Only in the month of pure yang do noble persons deplore it, wherefore there are the practices of beating drums and presenting silk offerings." The Shuowen jiezi states that it is composed of 虫 'insect' and 飤 'feed', with 飤 also serving as phonetic).
