At the hearth (竈: *ts-*, *tsau* + *tau* fanqie; the Book of Rites says: 'The earth sacrifice is called the hearth.' Zheng's commentary says: 'A minor deity that dwells among humans, watching for minor faults to send reprimands and warnings.' The Shuowen says: 'A cooking hearth; takes the cave radical and *zao* abbreviated phonetic.' Also written as 竈, vulgarly written as 竈; written in the sūtra as 竈, which are all incorrect).
