童齔 (a child shedding milk teeth: chu + ren fanqie; ancient pronunciation was cha + jin fanqie. The shedding of milk teeth is called 齔. The *Shuowen jiezi* states: "A boy grows teeth at eight months and sheds his milk teeth at eight years; a girl grows teeth at seven months and sheds her teeth at seven years." The character is composed of 'tooth' (齒) with 'seven' (七) as its phonetic element. The *Shiming* says: "齔 means to wash (xi); it refers to casting off and washing clean the old teeth so that new ones may emerge.")
