The *Shuowen jiezi* says: 'Sound (音). Arising in the mind and having modulated rhythm on the outside is called 音.' It refers to the notes gong, shang, jue, zhi, and yu; also metal, stone, silk, bamboo, gourd, clay, leather, and wood. It is formed from 言 [speech] containing 一 [one]. In one scripture it is written 暗 with the mouth radical; the *Shuowen jiezi* says: 'Between Qi and Song, when a child cries without stopping it is called 暗.' This is not the meaning intended by the scripture).
