Kalandaka (迦蘭陀): also rendered Kalandaka (迦蘭䭾迦) or Kalandaka (羯蘭鐸迦); it is the name of a bird, resembling a magpie. 'Veṇuvana' (鞞紐婆那) is here translated as Bamboo Grove, meaning a great grove of bamboo. These birds mostly perched in this grove. In the past, there was a king who was sleeping here; a snake came wishing to bite him, and the birds cried out, awakening him. Grateful for their kindness, the king scattered food to feed the birds. The householder who owned the grove then took his name from this bird, being named Kalandaka. Formerly it housed non-Buddhists, but later was offered to the Tathāgata.
