蕃息（輔表反尚書庶草蕃蕪孔安國曰蕃滋也謂滋多也周禮以蕃鳥獸鄭玄云蕃息也釋名曰息塞也言物滋息塞滿也今中國謂蕃息為嬔息嬔音亡万反周成難字曰嬔息也同時為一嬔亦作此字）。

Multiply and thrive [蕃息] (fanqie: 輔表 [fán]; the Shangshu says: "The many grasses flourished [蕃] and grew rank"; Kong Anguo says: "蕃 means flourishing, meaning flourishing and multiplying." The Zhouli says: "To multiply the birds and beasts"; Zheng Xuan says: "蕃 means to multiply." The Shiming says: "息 means full, meaning things flourish and multiply, filling up." Now in China multiplying and thriving is called 嬔息; 嬔 has the fanqie 亡万 [wàn]. Zhou Cheng's Nanzhi says: "嬔 means to multiply; giving birth at the same time is called a litter [嬔], and it is also written with this character").
