Beating and flogging (楚撻, [楚 is pronounced with the fanqie] *chu* + *lü*, another name for chaste tree (*jing*); the *Hanshu* records Lu Jia saying that King Zhuang of Qin was named Chu, so it was changed to *jing*, which became widespread; *ta* (撻) means striking; when striking someone with a chaste-tree switch (*chu*) it causes pain, hence it is called 'chaste-tree pain' (*chutong*)).
