咫尺 (The first character is *zhi* + *er* fanqie; Du [Yu]'s commentary to the *Zuo tradition* says: "Eight inches is called a 咫." The *Shuowen* says: "The hand of an ordinary woman, eight inches long, is called a 咫, the Zhou foot-rule; derived from 尺 with 只 phonetic." The second character is *chi* + *zhi* fanqie; the *Shuowen* says: "Ten inches; the ten tenths of a human hand's pulse is the *cun kou*; ten inches make a foot [尺]; the flesh with which one indicates feet and inches, compasses and squares. In the Zhou system, inches, feet, spans, yards, and fathoms—all measures—took the rites of man as standard; derived from 尺 and 乙, 乙 being what marks it").
