怯怖（上匡業反或作㹤說文云多畏也禮記云勇者苦怯玉篇云怯畏劣也怯去也下普布反或作悑廣雅怖懼也考聲云怖遽也渠御反懼也正作遽說文云怖猶惶恐也從心布聲也）。

Cowardly and terrified (怯怖) (The first character has the fanqie kuang + ye [q-]; also written 㹤. The Shuowen says: 'Having much fear.' The Liji says: 'The courageous suffer from cowardice.' The Yupian says: 'Qie (怯) means fearful and weak; qie means to retreat.' The second character has the fanqie pu + bu [b-]; also written 悑. The Guangya says: 'Bu (怖) means frightened.' The Kaosheng says: 'Bu means hurried (遽), [with the fanqie] qu + yu [j-], meaning terrified; properly written 遽.' The Shuowen says: 'Bu is like being panic-stricken; derived from xin (heart) with bu as phonetic').
