Burnt wick (焦炷: the first character has the fanqie 即姚反; Zheng [Xuan's] commentary on the Liji states: "Jiao (焦) means scorched smell." The Guangya states: "Jiao means blackened." The Shuowen jiezi states: "From the bird radical (隹) and the fire radical." Sūtra texts often write it as 燋 (fanqie 即藥反); note that 燋 refers to the wood used for scorching tortoise carapaces, not the sūtra's meaning. The second character, 炷, has the sound 注; note that a wick (炷) refers to the burnt wick beneath a lamp's flame. The character appeared in modern times and is not found in the Shuowen jiezi; it too is a picto-phonetic character).
