聰敏（上倉公反韓詩云聰明也考聲云耳聽明審也說文云聽察也從耳悤聲下眉殞反考聲云聰䎸也孔注尚書云敏明達於事也杜註左傳云敏達也又云審也聲類云敏敬也說文云敏疾也從支厵從每母改反每亦聲也）。

聰敏 (The first character has the fanqie: 倉公反 [cōng]. The Han Poetry Commentary says: "聰 means bright." The Kaosheng says: "Hearing clearly and discerningly with the ears." The Shuowen says: "To listen and investigate; semantic with 耳, 悤 is phonetic." The second character has the fanqie: 眉殞反 [mǐn]. The Kaosheng says: "聰䎸 (clever and awakened)." Kong's commentary on the Shangshu says: "敏 means being clear and knowledgeable in affairs." Du's commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: "敏 means perceptive;" and also says: "discriminate." The Shenglei says: "敏 means respectful." The Shuowen says: "敏 means quick; semantic with 攴, derived from 每 [pronounced with the fanqie 母改反 [mǎi]], 每 is also phonetic").
